Light and Heavy

Bu yerleştirme biraz nasıl bir hayata maruz kaldığımızla, biraz hayatı nasıl algıladığımızla ilişkili. Görünüşler ile gerçekler arasındaki farkla. Kuşkusuz mekâna hükmeden bu yapı hem hafif hem de ağır. İçeriye doğru arayüzler yoluyla sizi bir expedisyona davet ediyor. Bir tür hakikat pornografisi, ya da mağara alegorisi.

Gerçeği ya yitirdik ya da yitirmek üzereyiz. Kameraların arzularımız üzerine yaptığı etkiden bahsediyorum. Dijital arayüzler görüntünün proliferasyonu ve hızlı yayılımı hem gerçekliklerimizi değiştirdi hem de beklentilerimizi arttırdı. Dolayısıyla hayal kırıklıklarımızı da…

Dijital ile ‘doğal’ olana daha da mesafelendik. Dokunma duyumuz bile dolayımlandı. Bir tür dolayımlar evreni içindeyiz. Oturma odamız her yer, her yer ise ekrandaki görüntü oldu. Hakikat her gün yeniden yazılıp bize sunulan ekrandaki bir tür pornografiye dönüştü.

Dışarıya çıkıp gün ışığında hakikati görüp mağaradakileri uyarmak da mümkün değil sanki. Çünkü dışarısı da artık görünüşler dünyası. Ve artık kimimiz çadırımızı alıp kaçacağımız bir içerisi arıyoruz. Hayat artık hem çok hafif hem de çok ağır.

This installation is somewhat related to the kind of life we are exposed to, how we perceive it; the difference between appearances and reality. Undoubtedly, this structure that dominates space is both light and heavy. Invites you to an expedition through interfaces towards the inside. A kind of pornography of truth, or an allegory of the cave.

We’ve either lost the truth or are about to lose it. The effect that cameras have on our desires, the proliferation and rapid spread of digital interfaces and images have both changed our realities and increased our expectations, and so our disappointments too.

Via digital, we’ve distanced ourselves even more from the ‘natural’. Even our sense of touch has been mediated. We are in a kind of universe of mediations. Our living room is everywhere and everywhere has become the image on the screen. The truth has become a kind of pornography on the screen that is re-written and re-presented to us every day.

It seems impossible to go outside, see the truth in the daylight and warn those in the cave. Because outside is now a world of appearances, some of us are now looking for an INSIDE to escape into with our tents. Life is now both very light and very heavy.

Ahmet Güven is an artist, curator, and researcher with a background in engineering, design and fine arts. He has MFA degree and is a PhD candidate at Hacettepe University Fine Arts Sculpture Department. Before that he graduated from METU Electronics Dept and has taken various lectures at METU Industrial Department on design methods and industrial aesthetics. His research topics include post-human condition in tech driven world at the intersection of material culture, design and art. He has completely immersed himself into art after resigning from his corporate job and opening his solo exhibition “One No One” at Venice in 2018 devoted to his carrier path U-turn and existential crise.
